July 17, 2010
His Excellency Ban Ki-Moon
Secretary General
The Honorable Dr. Ahmad Shaheed
Special Rapporteur
The United Nations
New York, NY, 10017

Dear Sirs
This is an urgent appeal to you gentlemen to use your good offices to stop yet another tragedy unfolding in an Iranian prison. The health condition of Mr. Heshmatollah Tabarzadi, a prisoner of conscience who has spent most of the past 14 years incarcerated, is seriously deteriorating because prison authorities have refused to transfer him to a medical facility for proper treatment.

According to reports from his fellow prison mates at the Rajai-Shahr prison, he suffered several heart attacks recently.
Mr. Tabarzadi is the leader of the banned Democratic Front of Iran and a proponent of democracy and non-violence. He was last arrested on 27 December 2009 and is serving an eight year prison term. He had reported earlier that he was beaten during his detention and threatened with rape in order to force him to sign a false confession.
We are alarmed by the increasing violence perpetrated by the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran on innocent political activists. There are numerous confirmed reports as well as hard evidence of all kinds of human rights abuses including torture, rape and outright executions. We have consistently hoped that the United Nations would rally the international community to take action to force the release of all prisoners of conscience. However, in the absence of such determined action, we repeat our urgent request that the United Nations take immediate action to bring pressure on the government of the Islamic Republic to provide all prisoners professional medical treatment and the due process of law as required by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to which Iran is a signatory.
We thank you in advance.
Respectfully
